New and Noteworthy Plants from the Torrey Range: 2012

 

Acalypha gracilens A. Gray (Euphorbiaceae, native) – vouchered from Passaic Co., NJ; and Monmouth Co., NJ

Actaea rubra (Ait.) Willd. (Ranunculaceae, native NJS2) – reported from Sussex Co., NJ.

Aldrovanda vesiculosa L. (Droseraceae, non-native) – vouchered from Sussex Co., NJ; 1st record from the Torrey Range and perhaps North America?

Aralia spinosa L. (Araliaceae, non-native) – vouchered from Suffolk Co., NY; 1st documented case of A. spinosa truly escaping from cultivation in the Torrey Range and not a mis-identification of A. elata.

Asclepias quadrifolia Jacq. (Asclepiadaceae, native NJS3) – observed in Passaic Co., NJ.

Bartonia paniculata (Michx.) Muhl. (Gentianaceae, native NYS1) – vouchered from Suffolk Co., NY.

Bellis perennis L. (Asteraceae, non-native) – vouchered rom Nassau Co., NY; 1st record from Nassau Co.

Betula papyrifera Marsh. (Betulaceae, native NJS2) – reported from Passaic and Warren Cos., NJ.

Carex kobomugii Ohwi (Cyperaceae) – vouchered from Queens Co., NY; only 2nd report of this invasive species in NY.

Chamaecyparis thyoides (L.) BSP. (Cupressaceae, native NYS2) – vouchered from Suffolk Co., NY.

Clerodendrum trichotomum Thunb. (Verbenaceae, non-native) – vouchered from Passaic Co., NJ; possibly adventive> trip leader Joe Labriola states “The Clerodendrum collected on the lower east-facing slope of Garret Mountain is not located in an area where horticultural plantings were installed.  There are also no Clerodendrum planted with the other recent ornamental horticultural plantings around the Lambert Castle building, walkways, and parking lots.  How it got in its present location remains a mystery.  There are currently several plants of various sizes present and I will monitor during next growing season.” Bill Standeart states ”Probably not spreading much, but a persistent, established patch.  Looks like sprouted from seeds that came in with dumped garden waste.”

Dryopteris clintoniana (D. Eaton ex A. Gray) Dowell (Dryopteridaceae, native NJS3) – vouchered from Passaic Co., NJ.

Eleocharis flavescens var. olivacea (Torrey) Gleason (Cyperaceae, native) – vouchered from Suffolk Co., NY.

Eriophorum virginicum L. (Cyperaceae, native) – vouchered from Suffolk Co., NY.

Fallopia cilinodis (Michx.) Holub (Polygonaceae, native NJS2) – observed in Passaic Co., NJ.

Gamochaeta purpurea (L.) Cabrera (Asteraceae, native NYS3) – reported from Nassau Co., NY; 1st  record from Nassau Co.?

Gentiana clausa Raf. (Gentianaceae, native) – reported from Passaic Co., NJ.

Glyceria obtusa (Muhl.) Trin. (Poaceae, native) – vouchered from Suffolk Co., NY; 1st report since 1992.

Helianthemum bicknellii Fern. (Cistaceae, native NJS3) – vouchered from Passaic Co., NJ.

Hibiscus trionum L. (Malvaceae, non-native) – vouchered from Passaic Co., NJ; 1st record from Passaic Co.?

Hydrangea paniculata Sieb. (Hydrangeaceae, non-native) – vouchered from Fairfield Co., CT; definite adventive specimen collected from swamp.

Juncus diffusissimus Buckley (Cyperaceae, non-native) – voucherd from Passaic Co., NJ.

Juncus scirpoides Lam. (Cyperaceae, native NYS1) – observed from Suffolk Co., NY.

Kalopanax septemlobus (Thunb.) Koidz (Araliaceae, non-native) – reported from Nassau Co., NY.

Lamiastrum galeobdolon (L.) Ehren. & Polatschek (Lamiaceae, non-native) – observed in Passaic and Sussex Cos., NJ.

Microstegium vimineum (Trin.) Camus (Poaceae, non-native) – vouchers collected from extreme eastern Suffolk Co., NY (Napeague and Montauk); confirming spread of this invasive species to the eastern reaches of Long Island.

Mimulus alatus Ait. (Scrophulariaceae, native NJS3) – observed in Passaic Co., NJ.
