Memoirs of the Torrey Botanical Society

The Memoirs of the Torrey Botanical Society are published at irregular intervals in volumes of various sizes when a feature subject or a special collation of topics arises. The peer-reviewed Memoirs comprise a series of longer botanical papers (over 50 printed pages long) and monographs that began in 1889.

To date, 70 issues have been published in 29 volumes. Prior to 2005, the publication was known as the Memoirs of the Torrey Botanical Club. Early issues of the Memoirs were often dedicated to taxonomic monographs and revisions by a single author, but more recent issues have presented discussions of topics by a collaboration of authors.

Vols 1-25 of the Memoirs can be accessed via JSTOR. Volumes 1-16 are freely available. More information on access to the Memoirs can be found here.

Historical Issue: 150 Years of the Torrey Botanical Society (Volume 29)

The legacy of John Torrey (1796-1873) has many dimensions, all of which revolve around his unsurpassed prominence as a scholar of North American botany during most of the 19th century. This historical volume of the Memoirs of the Torrey Botanical Society is occasioned by the 2017 celebration by the Torrey Botanical Society of the 150th anniversary of the club’s formation in New York City in 1867.

This volume contains 10 original articles reviewing the multiple legacies of John Torrey as well as the proceedings and abstracts of the lectures presented at the Torrey Society’s 150th Anniversary Symposium held in September 2017.

Delmarva Lichens: An Illustrated Manual (Volume 28)

Delmarva Lichens is the first comprehensive lichen flora presented in modern times for eastern North America and the only treatment of the macro- and micro-lichens in the mid-Atlantic region. The authors, James Lendemer and Nastassja Noell, include the 299 species of lichens documented from Delmarva, presented in a current phylogenetic arrangement, providing identification keys, descriptions, maps of species distributions, a color image for nearly all those treated, along with proposed conservation status.

Catalogue of the Vascular Plants of New York State (Volume 27)

Continuing the celebration of our 150th Anniversary, Torrey Botanical Society is pleased to announce the publication of the Catalogue of the Vascular Plants of New York State, by David Werier. The Catalogue is a much needed up-to-date account of the vascular plants known from outside of cultivation in New York State. As a result of a fresh and independent examination of the flora, the Catalogue differs significantly from previous checklists for the state and incorporates much new research.

The Catalogue’s introduction includes a summary of the past and present status of the flora in New York, starting with John Torrey’s publications in the 1840s.

The annotated species list, which includes 3,524 species, 134 additional infraspecific taxa, and 264 hybrids, contains scientific names, common names, synonyms, nativity status, nonnative status, voucher information, state ranks for rarities, and notes on certain species.
